    • When Trisha Nelson learns about the fracking wells planned for the land just behind her son’s school, she is shocked that such a notoriously dangerous operation could happen so close to children and their community. The wells had been planned for a site in a predominantly White neighborhood, and when the parents protested, they were moved to Trisha’s mostly BIPOC community where resources for opposition are less readily available. She joins the fight to stop the operation and connects with a state-wide movement to mandate more distance between fracking wells and communities. Activists have devised a ballot initiative to protect the land and the rights of communities to determine what happens where they live, to which the oil and gas industry responds with a $50 million campaign to sabotage and undermine their efforts. Fracking the System: Colorado’s Oil and Gas Wars reveals the tactics of an industry hellbent on extracting its profits from under the feet of people determined to defend the health of their community and land. Their efforts culminate in an overhaul bill in the Colorado State legislature that start to shift the playing field, but this chapter of the story of the oil and gas wars is a small microcosm of the larger climate justice movement, and a lesson for front line activists about the stakes and hurdles faced by the climate justice movement.
