    • Synopsis
    • In the 7th century AD, Songtsen Gampo, the Emperor of Tibet, contracted marriage alliances
with his neighboring countries. He was first granted the hand of a Nepalese princess. Then the
Chinese Emperor offered him one of his daughters. His two brides each gave him a statue of
the Buddha. Intrigued by this figure, the emperor then embarked upon religious instruction. He
had two temples built to house the statues, and this is how Buddhism came to Tibet.
This story is told to a very young boy. He has just been recognized as the 4th incarnation in the
line of dalai-lamas. As his instructor explains the existence of past lives, we go back in time with
him. That inner voyage touches upon both the teachings of Buddhist thought and the sweeping
outline of the history and culture of Tibet.
That principle of transmission, in which each child receives a teaching intended to trigger a
memory of whom he was before, is the through line of the film.
The 1st Dalai-lama, or “ Ocean of Wisdom ” – so named from his third reincarnation on, by a
Mongol king – began as a simple monk from one of the many Buddhist monasteries in this
country that is currently in turmoil. The 5th Dalai-lama became the ruler of Tibet, receiving lands
that a Mongol king had conquered for him. Today, the 14th Dalai-lama is a world-renowned
symbol, living in exile, whose struggle resonates across the planet.
The film will evoke the historical and spiritual history of Tibet, through this evolving
portrait of fourteen successive dalai-amas, from reincarnation to reincarnation.
