    • Synopsis
    • Chasing DeKooning is based on a true story about a young Cuban kid, Joe, from the Lower East Side whose best friend, Chris ends up dating Willem DeKooning’s daughter and pinching a painting from the artist hoping to cash in on it in 1977. Joe is an art student at SVA and knows the worth of the painting. When the two decide to hide the painting in the basement of Chris’s sister’s building a wiseguy, Vincent Salvo, witnesses and aids the two kids not knowing that the painting is a masterpiece and worth a ton of dough. Twenty years later Joe finds himself in a mid-life crisis stuck in a dead-end job printing wedding invitations. The bills are piling up. His wife Angela has dedicated her life to their daughter Brittany. Vincent has been away doing 20 years at Ossining for racketeering and has just been released. Denise, Chris’s sister has recently been widowed and forgotten about the painting. When news breaks that Willem DeKooning has died in 1997 the race is on to find the missing painting for the Christie’s auction.
In an effort to find the painting Vincent must first find Denise. He calls his cousin Sal from the neighborhood. Sal is a gay man with a big personality. His boyfriend Jeff is quiet and reserved and just happens to work as an art dealer. At the same time Joe has reawakened his passion for art and his passion for Denise at the same time. He takes days off of work to visit the museum, to paint and to have dinner with the woman of his dreams from his youth. His reawakening puts a strain on his marriage.
With the help of Sal and his friends Vincent locates Denise and befriends her as a fatherly figure from the neighborhood. When Vincent finds out that Joe is seeing Denise he realizes Joe is after the painting as well. Vincent comes clean and tells Denise that the painting she has is worth millions and that Joe is only dating her so that he can get the painting. After a scuffle between Vincent and Joe ensues culminating in them falling off the roof of Denise’s Brooklyn brownstone, Denise takes matters into her own hands.
It is a film about the resilience of the spirit, hope, charity and forgiveness.
