Thirteen-hundred years ago, in a desolate Irish valley which harbours the Kells Abbey, lives a lively and good-natured 12-year-old orphan named Brendan. Raised by his uncle, the authoritarian Abbot Cellach who rules the abbey of Kells with an iron hand. Brendan is wooed by the sirens of creativity and imagination when he meets Brother Aidan, a whimsical old man, master illuminator and keeper of an extraordinary, but unfinished, book of illuminations… Brendan will finally defy his strong-minded uncle and enter the forest where adventure, danger and action await him. With the help of a 12-year-old feral girl, Brendan will face his deepest fears and risk death. Invading Vikings, a mythical serpent god and a true forest spirit are just some of the encounters Brendan will have on his terrifying and elating journey to imagination. A film where reality and fantasy blend, where truth and legend finally come together.
