    • Synopsis
    • Lonny Baum is a 30 year old white novelist living in New York City. He dreams of one day expressing his political sentiments in a novel that will tell the truth about racism which he believes lies at the heart of white America. One day he meets Denise Shepard, a beautiful seventeen year old black high school senior, studying for her SAT in Central Park. They become friends and out of the kindness of his heart, he offers to tutor her for free. In the course of their relationship, Lonny unknowingly becomes the epitome of everything he, in principle, detests about America. He assumes the "white man's burden," a notion dear to Western sensibilities, that it is the white man's responsibility to enlighten and improve the lives of "people of color."
