    • Synopsis
    • ,Birth of a Family’ tells the story of three children and their longing for safety and trust within a
protective family. Since they were not born into such a family they have to be on the lookout for a new
home that can substitute for their own parents’ care. For this aim they are ready to take high risks, even
cross geographic and cultural borders. Today more than 15 million orphans and half-orphans live in
orphanages. They are all longing for the exchange of love and affection that is so important for their
development. But only few of them will succeed.
On average four to five children enter a new home every day in Germany, see their new rooms and the
toys waiting for them, and sleep in their own bed for the first time. They are two, six or even older and
have to adapt to a completely new life from one day to the next. Suddenly they have all that they have
been wishing for – a family, mother, father, sometimes siblings. But it’s still a long way until they really feel
      at home. !!
A five year old child from Colombia sets forth on a journey to Hamburg with its new parents – a
journey that will change its life. A twelve year old girl in Rio de Janeiro wishes nothing more dearly than
to have a real family, but that would mean to leave her siblings behind in the orphanage. A grown Korean
woman tries to bring together her biological mother from Korea with her Jewish adoptive parents in
order to become reconciled with the story of her adoption.
