    • Fernando Lugo is the first center-left President in the history of Paraguay. He assumes presidency in 2008 with the support of the popular sectors and takes forward a series of measures such as the soy tax, the income rent, subsidy for housewives, that put on a war footing to the upper classes and the traditional parties.
During his four years in office, Fernando Lugo has had 23 coup attempts, and at only eight months from finishing his term, a bloody event shakes up his government: the so called “Curuguaty Massacre”, a confrontation between the landless peasants and the police that results in 18 casualties.
The MPs from the Red and the Liberal parties, accuse Fernando Lugo of being responsible for the “Curuguaty Massacre” and decide to perform an impeachment for malfeasance and Lugo is bound to resign.
Curiously, the massacre occurs just eight months before the next presidential elections, in which Lugo leads as a favorite in vote polls. .
“Beaten Land” seeks to unravel the true causes of Fernando Lugo’s dismissal; was it an impeachment or parliamentary coup? And even so, what were the reasons that encouraged the opposition, and who were the main beneficiaries and therefore the lobbyists of this event, which generates a break in our recent Latin American history.
