    • Synopsis
    • Though freedom of expression is guaranteed in Poland’s constitution, there are legal restrictions on this fundamental right. Article 196 of Penal Code bans offenses toward religious feelings or sentiment. There have been several investigations and charges under Article 196 in recent years. Most of them have targeted writers, musicians, and other artists.

One of the cases: Pawel Hajncel, is a Polish performance artist, who adamantly points out that public space belongs to ALL citizens. Every year he organizes ‘a happening’ during the annual Corpus Christi procession.
After my last performance I received a notice from the Prosecutor’s office informing me that the matter was filed by a priest – reports Pawel while awaiting his trial. No wonder he should be afraid of consequences: the penalty can be two years imprisonment. Polish government has recently created a Special Parliamentary Workgroup Against the Secularization of Polish Society .

The documentary will follow artists who challenge Catholic political correctness and the infamous Article 196. Why do they do it? What price do they have to pay for their ‘transgressions’?
