    • Synopsis
    • A community vibrant with African migrants from across the continent, searching for something better, spliced between South African’s indigenous, multi-cultured stalwarts, Yeoville has conceived it’s own set of rules to survive. Occasionally legal. Often - not! Set in this district, ANDANI AND THE MECHANIC is a coming-of-age story of a twenty-one year old Afro-hipster, who embarks on a journey of self-discovery when she's thrown into a world of greasy overalls, gender stereotypes and abandoned vintage cars once loved, in need of a young woman’s re-inventive touch to bring them back into love again….
Since the death of her father, Moses, seven years ago, after a freak accident in his own beloved garage, Andani’s “Uncle” Zama and part owner, announces that the garage has been in severe debt and it’s time to sell . Andani’s mother, Dorothy agrees with the sale. However, Andani’s memories of her father are rekindled. Shocked at the state of the decline and armed with reminders of its former glory days, Andani persuades Dorothy to a reprieve. Zama has no choice but to reluctantly agree. And so with David, the Congolese mechanic who harbours trauma from his dark past, and Zoum, the enthusiastic but exam-averse non-mechanic, the trio set to rebuilding the business. After a few false starts and a touch of sabotage, care of Johan, a local, macho garage owner, Andani grabs onto the vintage car make over idea, and against all odds, the business heads into profit. And Andani into David’s arms – on occasion.
However, as success looms, Andani becomes obsessed with the version of her father she’s re-creating through the garage. She'll go to any length to preserve this illusion, even to the extent of betraying David in order to save the business from closure by the cops, and blackmailing Zama when she discovers his true motivations for the sale - to sell his shares to Andani and to walk away from his desire for a relationship with Dorothy.
But success feels empty when realization sets in – how far she is prepared to go to preserve something that is lost entirely in the past – her father, the garage and refusing any steps forward into a future for herself and those she loves.
And so Andani sets to right wrongs with those she's hurt - a new era begins – a new garage, a new name, with Zama and Dorothy at the helm. And as for Andani – from the skills she acquired, she begins to build a new business, but this time with her eye on the future – not the past
