July 1974. A peculiar little village somewhere in Belgium. FREDDY (11) always wears a high collared cycling t-shirt and an old pilot’s hat to hides his scars. The burns to his left ear and some of his skin have been with him since he was a baby. ANGEL, Freddy’s mother, keeps him at home as much as she can, away from the cruel outside world. Freddy dreams of being like his hero, the legendary cyclist Eddy Merckx. On a dilapidated old bike, suspended from the roof with ropes, Freddy rides each stage of the Tour de France alongside his cycling god. When Merckx wins, he wins too. When an Italian girl, CLARA, comes to the village on holiday and goes into Freddy’s father’s butcher’s shop, Freddy doesn’t just fall in love with her because of her stunning beauty. She’s also is a member of the Molteni family, Eddy Merckx’s main sponsor. In a cycle race, organised to celebrate the opening of the first supermarket, Freddy sets out to prove that he is as good a cyclist as his hero. By doing so he takes his first steps away from his mother. The outside world proves to be far tougher for a boy with Freddy’s scars than his mother predicted. After a setback Freddy stands up. He'll never give up. Just like his hero Eddy Merckx.
