    • Synopsis
    • ESTEFANÍA “EPA” GOYCO is a bitter thirtyfive-year-old primary school teacher plagued by a pessimistic life perspective. She flees from a Puerto Rico destroyed by Hurricane María when the first opportunity presents itself; her house 4 feet underwater and her school, along with over 200 others, threatened with permanent closure by the government. She promises her little student Julian, with whom she had been taking refuge, to find their secret cave and he gives her his disposable camera to bring back the evidence. Backpack full of everything she loves and overwhelmed by a feeling of guilt mixed with disappointment, Epa faces a pilgrimage through distant China accompanied by the animated personifications of her Heart and Fear: small, comical caricatures in constant conflict with each other that she insists on ignoring.
With her two intrepid companions, she travels a route through the Far East drawn by lost and recovered friendships representing the three types of love.
EROS, living in the city of Xi’an, is a childhood friend with whom she rekindles carnal passions from the distant past. FILIA, in Shanghai, is her BFF who left Puerto Rico only a few years ago and with whom she only entrusts her loves and fears. And AGAPE, the always elusive self-love, surprises her from within during an unexpected stop in Los Angeles, California, thanks to recurring encounters with the Chinese backpacker AMY.
But an unreciprocated “I love you”, the loss of Julian's camera and the disappearance of Heart right when she needed it most forces Epa into a battle with Fear, whom she manages to control on her own in the end. “I will not give in to despair”. Her journey and encounters generate a healing process that guides her towards making the ultimate decision: return to Puerto Rico and take control of her destiny.
