    • Synopsis
    • Ninth Century England is split into four Saxon kingdoms and besieged by hoards of merciless Vikings, hungry for land and riches. The Danes have overrun three of the island’s kingdoms following a series of bloody battles destined for infamy centuries on, and turn inexorably to the last one, Wessex, England’s stronghold.
All hope for England’s survival rests upon the shoulders of a single man, the hot-headed and courageous Saxon prince ALFRED, twenty-five year old younger brother to the weak KING ETHELRED of Wessex.
The rampaging Danes will not stop until Alfred has been sacrificed to the Vikings’ war god, Odin, using the traditional and gory ‘blood eagle’ technique.
Betrayed in matters of heart and state by his brother and adulterous wife, Alfred meets a fierce – but remarkably beautiful – Welsh warrior FIONA. Later, Fiona saves him from certain death and reveals that she is a Welsh princess. Alfred falls in love with her, but following his brother’s death, Alfred is crowned king and Fiona abandons him.
A mighty fleet of Viking ships and soldiers, led by their king GUTHRUM, attacks Wessex with odds two-to-one in their favour. But miraculously, a storm develops above the attackers and the ships are scattered and sunk, leaving Alfred to celebrate an unlikely victory.
Alfred dares to believe that Wessex might survive, but one night the Danes make a surprise attack, killing many of his soldiers and capturing his wife and children. Alfred is gravely wounded in the process and is forced to flee into the nearby marshes to survive.
Fiona returns during his recovery and Alfred, no longer able to control himself, has a torrid war-time affair with her. She convinces him that now is the time for him to save his kingdom. But after she contrives a plan in which the priests help to assemble the remaining English peasants, Fiona leaves again - this time for good. Her place is with her homeland - Wales.
With the final battlefield set, the fate of England rests with Alfred and his untrained peasant army. Outnumbered but fighting with remarkable courage, the Saxons defeat the fierce Nordic warriors after Alfred personally wounds King Guthrum.
Forced to surrender, the Vikings return Alfred’s family and England, country and language, is created. The country, language and royal bloodline runs through to Queen Elizabeth II to this day.
      Alfred never saw Fiona again.
