    • 1949 - The first years of the Cold War. Albert Schweitzer (Jeroen Krabbe) is regarded as one of the world's most eminent men thanks to his "Reverence for Life" philosophy, which he practices at Lambarene, his African jungle hospital. When Albert Einstein urges him to support the fight against the dangers of the A-Bomb, U.S. security services consider his involvement as a serious threat. A smear campaign is launched to discredit Schweitzer's lifework and to silence him. The Gabon government threatens to close his hospital, and acts of sabotage endanger his patients. Schweitzer has to make a decision: shall he continue to follow his conscience and raise his voice to warn the world?
