Documentary - Development 2026

IVO-WATTS RUSSELL, founder of 4AD, the most beautifully designed, achingly hip, critically successful record label of the 80’s and 90’s, gives it all up and disappears to New Mexico. Former guitarist, Ashley Horner, of PALE SAINTS, explores the story of the label and goes in search of the man.

    • Synopsis
    • Former guitarist with 4AD band Pale Saints and international award-winning filmmaker, Ashley Horner, will travel with a small crew to interview the key players in our story. Using the collaborative nature of filmmaking and the fresh time that lockdown has afforded a large group of creative individuals, we hope that each one will be generous enough to collaborate in the making of an interview/short film where they, their passion, their persona or their reality is the subject. It will invite the artists to play with the concept of what 4AD meant/means to them now as well as allowing us a glimpse into their mythical, magical or mundane worlds. These films will be woven into the tapestry of our feature length documentary and work as stand-alone shorts in their own right.
There are two grails of this filmmaking journey. One will be an interview with Ivo Watts-Russell, a man we think is living a hermit-like existence in New Mexico. The other will be to secure an interview with one of the most unique and beloved vocalists in indie rock history, Elizabeth Fraser, formerly of the Cocteau Twins.
