    • Synopsis
    • Melissa is trying to hold her life together. She came to Sydney a year ago from the country – a total ingénue – and to her delight soon had a famous boyfriend, Robert. He helped her become a model and get a life. Things have started to slip since they split up, she’s losing work and running out of money. Desperately clinging to her place in the cool-set where keeping up appearances is key, she tells people what she wants them to hear and blindly chases her ex and hipster friends. However, she is hiding more that we could possibly imagine. After being evicted, her bag breaks outside a bookshop and Tom, who works there, offers her a replacement. He is funny but a total geek, someone completely at odds to the lifestyle she’s chasing. Eventually his openness and lack of pretention encourages her to open up to him.
We learn about what she is hiding – her delusion about her life is just the tip of the iceberg – it is the death of her friend Alex in mysterious circumstances, which proves Melissa’s darkest secret. We go on her journey – both investigating a death and through this process, instigating a path of self-discovery. At first, Melissa is an unreliable narrator and there is a significant gap between what she tells Tom and what is really going on. However, as their relationship develops she becomes aware and ashamed of this discrepancy and moves towards a more truthful communication. Thus, we see the coming together of her inner and outer worlds. The anatomy of a relationship is revealed through these conversations: how humans open up to each other, what makes us tick and what makes the most unlikely people connect.
As the plot thickens whilst she strives for the truth about her friend, she finds the truth about herself. Through the discovery of deception, she finally establishes how the scene killed Alex and she has made a lucky escape.
