Day Zero Films was started in 1995 after the end of apartheid in South Africa by partners Laurence Dworkin and Don Edkins. After producing the first film on land reform in the new South Africa – The Broken String, and the Southern African SACOD series on life after war - Landscape of Memory, the Steps for the Future project on HIV and Aids was initiated. This was a multi-award winning innovative documentary film project screened globally, at over 200 film festivals, that continues to be distributed and screened by mobile cinemas and organizations world-wide.This led to the global documentary projects Why Democracy? (2007), with 10 long and 17 short films. The films have been screened by 55 broadcasters, winning more then 50 international awards including the Academy Award for Taxi to the Dark Side. Why Poverty?
