Production Company

Activist38 is founded in 2008 by Mina Mileva and Vesela Kazakova. It focuses on films with mix between the genres; documentaries with animation; strong fiction stories with social and political position, and animation. Activist38 is strongly present at international festival markets such as Sunny Side of the Doc, East European Forum in Jihlava, Zagreb Dox, Dok Leipzig, Share Your Slate at Berlinale, Producers Network in Cannes and Sofia Meetings, amongst others. Activist38 has sprung as a continuity of Mina Mileva’s previous animation company that did regular subcontracted work for the BBC, Channel 4, ITV, corporate clients and agencies as part of a professional network.

In November 2013, Activist38 released theatrically in Sofia the controversial documentary "Uncle Tony, Three Fools, and the Secret Service", co-produced by the Bulgarian National Television. The film is making an unprecedented record for lengthiest cinema release of a documentary ever in Bulgaria for more than 4 months running so far. It expects its International Premiere. The animated "Because of Mum", directed by Antoaneta Chetrafilova and premiered in Stuttgart Animation Festival 2013, was bought by ARTE Television to be broadcast in France, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium. So far it won two Bulgarian Academy Awards 2013 for Best Debut and Best Director and also Best Short and Best Animation at Phoenix Comicon Festival, USA. The company also works on the fiction projects "Sisters" and "Pancho and Alice". The latter is an ambitious Bulgarian-German coproduction, awarded Best Project at Sofia Meetings, MFI scholarship, and Cannes Producer’s Network Participation in 2012. This project was developed in EAVE 2013. Both “Sisters” and “Pancho and Alice” have received a development support from the Bulgarian National Film Centre.
