    • Synopsis
    • LEEMTE is an Afrikaans word meaning void – a space that should be filled but isn’t. The film deals with the unexpected complexities that face Jamaal, a troubled Muslim gangster, upon being released from prison and coming home to his mother and his girlfriend, Samiah. What should be a joyful homecoming is marred by a creeping paranoia about the community he enters as an outsider, a sense of impotence and inability to meet expectations. The film is set in the troubled Cape Town fisherman’s township Hangberg where traditional values battle the encroachment of drugs and gangsterism. Similarly Jamaal finds himself caught between the desire to change and live a meaningful life with the women he loves or return to a volatile existence driven by addiction and instant gratification.
