    • Synopsis
    • AIDS is “hidden away” in China, where the public knows little about the disease and often associates it with promiscuity. The fear of shame and discrimination has kept most patients from revealing their condition. For each, the future is uncertain and the present, with its myriad of emotions, must be dealt with day by day and often, alone.
After reading a book detailing the discrimination faced by AIDS patients in China, internationally acclaimed director Gu Changwei was moved to make a film that would bring the issue to the forefront. He began on a poignant love story, titled LOVE FOR LIFE, set against the backdrop of AIDS in a Chinese village. At the same time, renowned documentary filmmaker Zhao Liang initiated a project to recruit AIDS patients to participate in Gu’s film.
Filmed concurrently with LOVE FOR LIFE, TOGETHER is not merely a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the feature film but is also a touching exploration of the lives of real AIDS patients who are living in China. Though some are featured as actors in Gu’s fictionalized tale, their own stories are real and poignant. Zhao Liang takes the journey with the young and the old, all of whom face an uncertain future, and puts a human face to an important issue, forcing us to consider what happens after the production ends and the camera crews leave.
