    • Synopsis
    • Enter the Himalayan home of one of today’s intriguing figures –- the Dalai Lama.
While numerous documentaries place His Holiness in political, historical, or biographical contexts; now there is another story to tell. The first deep look at an enlightened leader…. at home
Documentary filmmaking legend Vitali Manski spends a day with the 14th Dalai Lama at his most intimate.
In this global icon’s residence, Vitali had almost unlimited access from a 3AM awakening until sunset, when the Buddhist leader sleeps. The footage, by itself, is exclusive – private prayer, treadmills, audiences, and then pseudo-downtime – watching television…and talking.
Here, the film crew enjoys a totally informal conversation about the essence of the Universe and the role an individual has to play in religion and in contemporary society.
Later, the film takes the audience on a journey through India, China and Russia, as His Holiness comments on environmental consciousness, trust between cultures, and the widening gap between rich and poor seem increasingly resonant.
The film is as enlightening as it is lyrical, and beautifully filmed.
Sunrise/Sunset is currently in the process of submission to the Oscar AMPAS awards.
A must-see for anyone interested in this amazing man!
