    • In 1951, American poet Elizabeth Bishop (Miranda Otto) finds herself lost creatively, and chooses to sail to South America to visit her old college friend Mary, (Tracy Middendorf) and Mary's lover, Brazilian entrepreneur Lota de Macedo Soares (Gloria Pires). Though hostility between Elizabeth and Lota forms, it's not long before they act on their deepest desires and form a romantic relationship. As time passes, each woman struggles to grasp what matters to them most in life, and they ultimately realize that if you want to win, you must first learn how to lose.
