    • Synopsis
    • Where is the boy?
The knight Bořek searches for his son, who has gone missing. Fired by stories about the heroism of child crusaders, little Jan has run away from home. Anguish and unease grow greater by the hour in the remote castle set amidst forest in sparsely populated countryside on the borders of Bohemia and Moravia. Little Jan, the only child of the knight Bořek and his wife Agatha, is lost. Messengers sent to search for the boy return to the castle without success.
Bořek, a knight on his final campaign, sets out on his own expedition to trace his son but is unable to catch up with him. Each time he arrives too late, finding witnesses who saw Jan and obtaining fragments of information that he tries to put together to discover the fate of his son.
Bořek’s crusade is a journey into his own unconscious, where he is forced to confront his greatest fear, which materialises as he meets the people Jan encountered and experiences the inhospitable landscape he might have travelled through. The image of his little boy becomes more and more blurred and so does reality. His memory fails him and everything crumbles into desert sand. His reunion with Jan takes place on the borders of dream and reality and the happy end is possibly no more than a phantasy of wish-fulfillment or the answer to a prayer. But before that, the knight must travel to the very brink of hopelessness, to the empty shore, where he must confront his worst projections.
