    • Synopsis
    • The Himalayas is home to the 14 mountains in the world that top eight thousand meters. They are known as the “eight-thousanders,” and they represent the ultimate challenge in mountain climbing.

      Dhaulagiri is one of them.

Four Argentine mountain climbers traveled there: Guillermo (documentary director), Christian (anthropologist), Sebastián (businessman), and Darío (Guillermo’s partner and head of the expedition).

Their objective was to reach Dhaulagiri’s peak and record the expedition in a documentary film.

They never imagined that one of them, Darío, would disappear during his solitary attempt to summit.

Nearly six years later, Guillermo feels that he must close this gaping wound. And he will try to do so by finishing the documentary that they went to film.

The movie that he and Darío had envisioned told of an adventure in the Himalayas. But that was not to be.

The movie that Guillermo will attempt will explore — among other issues — why what was supposed to happen, never did.

What did we do wrong? What were we after? What was Darío seeking? What am I seeking?...
Why does my personal search take me to the mountains?...
What are the limits? What are MY limits?...
When is it time to decide? What made me decide what I did? What made him decide what he did?...
Why didn’t we decide in the same way?...
      Can you question someone’s decision?...

Guillermo’s quest begins in Chubut province, where he lives; takes him to Buenos Aires, where Sebastián resides; and ends in Salta, where Christian is.

Throughout this new trip — an inner journey that also leads Guillermo toward his two friends — he searches for answers to these questions that continue to weigh on him, along with Darío’s absence.

And he mulls over the decisions that they made as a group, as mountain climbers, and as human beings — alone, unique and free in the face of a life-or-death situation.

“¡Dhaulagiri: ascent to the White Mountain” is a documentary that alternates between the grandeur of adventure and the intimacy of retrospection.

It is the story of a path that winds upward, twists downward and leads inward. A path of questions and reflections that, through the specific lens of mountaineering, addresses a universal subject: the search for the meaning of life.
