- Synopsis
- In 1956, Cuba is an island paradise catering to the rich and famous. A place where celebrities, socialites and mobsters all came to play. Lourdes "Lola" del Castillo and her prominent family live in Habana. The beautiful but rebellious 17 year old dreams of escaping her meaningless life. Her best friend Milagro is a beautiful black 19 year old and she and her mother are the maids next door to Lola’s home. Both girls audition for the chorus line of the famed Tropicana Night Club. Their lives forever change when they enter through the doors at 72A Habana, the place known the world over as a “Paradise under the stars”. An architectural marvel opened in 1939 that still stands, showcasing some of the most beautiful women in the world in barely-there costumes, with spectacular shows and a 40 piece house band that enchanted audiences.
  Hiding everything from her disapproving family, Lola lives a double life, exposing her to things she never imagined. Her innocence is quickly replaced by torrid affairs, heartbreak and betrayals. Her best friend Milagro struggles with her own demons and instead of escaping poverty and realizing her dreams, is trapped by the decay that surrounds her, bitterness and resentment. Their lives spiral out of control, as so does the world outside the iconic landmark.
  Corruption runs ramped and the mob sinks its teeth into Cuba’s Casinos as President Batista turns a blind eye. Sugar, Tobacco and Tourism is making many Cubans rich, but not all Cubans. The glitter and glamour can no longer mask the inequality and the poor and underprivileged rebel. Overthrows and back door deals lay the groundwork for a revolution and the end to Habana’s high life.
  Fidel and his rebels come down from the mountains of the Sierra Maestra, where they have been gaining strength, and unleash their tyranny on the unsuspecting island. Fidel’s promise of change changes everything for the worst and escape and exile are the only solution many can see. As a nation's doors close forever from the world, a glimmer of hope is opened for Lola when she is faced with her life’s most deciding moment.
